Port and Ship Familiarisation Course

The intention of this on-site course is to provide the participants the basic practical knowledge and background which will assist them during their daily tasks at the office when dealing with marine claims and insurance. The participants will be given the opportunity to see, at first hand, the handling/operation and condition of containers, bulk and metal products, reefer containers, perishables and dry-docks. During the course participants will be familiarised with the following aspects of shipping and port operations:

Port -Familiarisation

  • Marine nomenclature
  • The ship; lay-out, construction and operations
  • Terminal operations; role and responsibilities of the various persons
  • Port procedures
  • Transportation & storage of cargoes; containerised, palletised, bulk
  • The operations of a shipyard
  • Marine surveying

Tanker, Terminal and Liquid Cargo Course

During our three days on-site we will give our participants an exclusive view into the transport, handling and operational proceedings of liquid products such as mineral oils, chemicals and vegetable/ edible oils, marine fuels as well as bio fuels.

Participants will be taken on a journey through the port of Rotterdam, the beating heart of Europe's petro-chemical industry. Various tanker terminals, laboratories and, if possible, tanker vessels will be visited. The course has been developed to give a further insight into:

  • Transport and handling of a wide variety of liquid products
  • The role of the terminal in the supply chain and operations
  • Laboratory services
  • Marine fuel issues
  • Technical aspect for carrying wet bulk cargo
